Fault Tolerant Linux!
NEC proudly introduces the first commercially available
Linux-based fault tolerant server. Now Linux users can benefit from
the continuous availability provided by the NEC
Express5800/ft. NEC's award-winning fault tolerant server runs a
NEC “hardened” version of the Linux operating system, which allows
instantaneous CPU failover, hot swap components and I/O
failover. This breakthrough combination of hardened, open source
Linux with fault tolerant hardware means that Linux applications can
be run at the highest availability level without requiring any
modifications to Linux application software.
The Express5800/ft with Linux includes:
- NEC Fault Tolerant Linux –
significant enhancements to the Linux 2.4.2 kernel to support a
wide range of fault tolerant features
- Lock step Processing - ensures
that redundant processors execute the same instructions and
computations simultaneously. Should one processing module fail,
its counterpart continues operation without interruption of
service
- Hardened Drivers--SCSI, Fibre
Channel, and USB devices
- Hot Swap—allows for
replacement and surprise removal of all components including
internal hard disk drives

Fault Tolerance for Windows
Until recently, high availability in the Intel environment
required clustering. Although clusters provide hardware
redundancy, system failure can result in significant recovery
time and data loss. Clusters also require substantial resources
for software customization and additional staff capabilities,
adding to the system's complexity and total cost of ownership (TCO).
Express5800/ft servers significantly reduce your TCO and require
no more effort than conventional servers to integrate into your
network. Fault Tolerant Servers from NEC offer:
- Nonstop service for
Windows applications (5-9's of continuous
availability)
- Standard Wintel
architecture
- Complete redundancy of
major subsystems
- Instantaneous failover -
In the event of a fault, the system keeps running with no
interruption of service to your users
- Modular design for easy
maintenance
- Robust system
management
- True fault tolerance,
right out of the box - No special configuration for your
Windows applications
- Starting price of less
than $20K (USD)
